Properties of Equality

Published on

The addition and multiplication properties of equality are important concepts in algebra that can help you solve equations.

The addition property of equality states that if you add the same number to both sides of an equation, the equation remains true. For example:

If we have the equation:

x + 3 = 7

We can use the addition property of equality to isolate x by subtracting 3 from both sides of the equation:

x + 3 - 3 = 7 - 3

This simplifies to:

x = 4

The multiplication property of equality, on the other hand, states that if you multiply both sides of an equation by the same number, the equation remains true. For example:

If we have the equation:

2x = 8

We can use the multiplication property of equality to isolate x by dividing both sides of the equation by 2:

2x/2 = 8/2

This simplifies to:

x = 4

Therefore, the addition and multiplication properties of equality are useful tools that we can use to solve equations and isolate variables.
