Rounding and Approximations

Published on

Rounding and approximations are used in mathematics to make numbers easier to work with.

Rounding means making a number simpler by "rounding" it to the nearest whole number or to a specific place value.

For example, if you have the number 3.67, you could round it to the nearest whole number, which is 4.

Or, you could round it to the nearest tenth, which is 3.7.

Approximations are similar to rounding, but they are used when you want to estimate a number that is close to the actual answer, but not exact.

For example, let's say you're trying to estimate how many pieces of candy are in a jar. You could count the number of candies in a few small groups, then multiply the number of candies in one group by the total number of groups to get an estimate.

Using approximations and rounding can make math problems much easier to solve, especially when working with large numbers or decimals!
